Physical Therapy
Myofacial release, muscle energy, advanced joint mobilization and taping are some of the traditional physical therapy techniques offered at re:fit. We provide physical therapy services for a variety of orthopedic and neurologic conditions, and also prescribe customized exercise to enhance overall well-being and athletic performance.
Re:fit offers a unique approach to treatment by combining traditional physical therapy with the alternative techniques of Integrated Manual Therapy (IMT), as well as Pilates, Gyrotonic® and Feldenkrais exercises.to the top
Integrated Manual Therapy(IMT)
While traditional physical therapy focuses solely on the muscles, bones and joints, IMT looks at all systems of the physical body (cardiovascular, lymphatic, neural, gastrointestinal, and cranio-sacral) along with psychosocial, emotional and belief systems. For example, if you are experiencing pain in your neck, the source of that pain is not necessarily in the neck. The source could be dysfunction physical, psychosocial, emotional, or even spiritual. We “map” the body to determine the primary system of dysfunction and then use a combination of treatment tools, including hands-on energy work, nutritional recommendations and psychotherapeutic techniques to provide the best solution for you.
IMT has its roots in osteopathic medicine and has been developed by Sharon Giamatteo over the last 30 years.
All re:fit IMT practitioners are also licensed physical therapists.to the top
Pilates
As founder Joseph Pilates describes: "Good posture can be successfully acquired only when the entire mechanism of the body is under perfect control. Pilates is designed to give you suppleness, natural grace, and skill that will be unmistakably reflected in the way you walk, play and work."
The Pilates Method of Body Conditioning is an exercise form that has been in use since the 1920s. Using the five parts of the mind (intelligence, imagination, memory, intuition, and will), Pilates helps you develop and enhance strength, flexibility, control and alignment. Practicing Pilates improves your posture, energizes your body and helps treat injuries. The method includes apparatus and mat exercises that teach power and control. Through the six hundred exercises and their variations, you will learn to move using your core stabilizing muscles. By resisting springs on the apparatus, and your own body weight on the mat, movement becomes more natural and functional.to the top
Gyrotonic®
The Gyrotonic® Expansion System is an exercise modality that guides people to simultaneously stretch and strengthen muscles and tendons while also articulating and mobilizing the joints. Corresponding breathing patterns are engaged during the performance of the exercises, thereby increasing coordination, endurance and aerobic activity. Derived from dance, yoga, swimming and Tai Chi; arcs, circles and spirals are performed in the joints throughout the body.
Gyrotonic®, with its diagonal spirals, is particularly effective for clients with scoliosis. While Pilates works in straight planes, Gyrotonic® exercises are in combined and transverse planes.to the top
Feldenkrais™
Mankind has the ability to create habits of movement that are useful as well as harmful. To change less desirable habits, we can learn to increase sensitivity and differentiate what we are doing from what we think we are doing.
The Feldenkrais Method is comprised of two parts: Functional Integration and Awareness Through Movement. Functional Integration takes place in a private lesson. It is designed to help integrate the whole body through gentle touch and movement. The process changes the nervous system, which allows the healthy movement patterns to hold. Awareness Through Movement is a group class where clients discover efficient ways of moving with ease through verbal cues provided by the instructor.
Feldenkrais lessons are performed slowly without pain or strain. The object is to discover in ourselves unknown reactions so that easier, more effortless actions can take place. The goal is to help people improve their physical performance and self image.to the top
Massage
Therapeutic Massage reduces tension with the use of relaxing strokes and stretches that increase circulation, bringing nutrition to the cells and releasing toxins. Deeper pressure is used to smooth away tight areas, lengthening and relaxing the connective tissue, reducing stress and relieving pain.
Thai Yoga Massage harmonizes the energetic body with acupuncture points as you breathe and relax into assisted yoga stretches. This technique enhances vitality by clearing and calming the mind and body. to the top
Breath-Based Bodywork
Breath-Based Bodywork is based on the principle that how we experience life is reflected in our own unique breathing pattern.
A basic session includes a breathing analysis of your particular breathing pattern, and specific Transformational Breath® techniques to allow for some basic movement in your system. Using a gentle intuitive hands-on method based in principles of Shiatsu and CraniolSacral Therapy to assist the process, I will guide you into deeper connection with your own "Inner Healer" and healing energy. The session will end with VortexHealing® energetic work to harmonize your system and/or to nurture and expand the heart. What presents in your system during the session will determine whether the work will focus more with the breath, the physical body, or the energetic system, but most sessions will include some aspect of each.
Often, a client will have a specific issue they would like to work with more deeply. In this case, it is highly beneficial to have one or more individual Transformational Breathing or VortexHealing sessions. These are profound modalities that can have a powerful effect to clear the roots of core issues.to the top
VortexHealing® Energetic Therapy
VortexHealing® Energetic Therapy is designed to transform the roots of emotional consciousness, heal the physical body, and awaken freedom within the human heart. Unlike most other energetic therapies, VortexHealing® works not only with energy but also with consciousness, to bridge deeply in one's system to affect and clear the profound conditioning that is the basis for most dis-ease, working to break down the sense of separation-identity that supports dysfunction wherever it is held in the system. As this sense of separation in one's system breaks down, there is a greater awareness of integration and harmony in the system that then aids in the healing process.to the top
